Around Allerton

The eastern part of the neighborhood, including Astor Avenue, features detached houses that create an almost suburban feeling. There is a large co-op building featuring coveted rent-stabilized apartments, known as Allerton Co-Ops. Some streets feature brick buildings with five or six floors of apartments. Other streets are home to charming single-family homes with lots of characters. Real estate prices are, across the board, very attractive and affordable to homebuyers looking to relocate from the more expensive Manhattan.

Allerton Avenue, the main street that runs through the middle of the neighborhood, is the go-to spot for all things culinary. Tessey’s, a soul food restaurant, is one of the local favorites along with Latin Fusion. There’s an impressive range of cuisine options, as well as neighborhood staples, like Allerton Diner. White Plains Road is another street with a few options for restaurants. Comparatively, Allerton offers plenty of options on where to eat.

Intricate Catholic churches and vibrant storefronts mingle to create the beauty of Allerton. Brick row houses make up much of the residential offering. Bronx Park is certainly the highlight of the neighborhood. With trails that wind around a forest and recreational courts, it’s just as viable as Van Cortlandt Park when it comes to greenspace. Those seeking a slower pace of life out of busy Manhattan or even other parts of the Bronx can find a peaceful residential vibe in Allerton.

Check out the skate park located near the edge of Bronx Park East for a peak into a subculture and impressive tricks. Bring a blanket and set up a picnic or opt for dinner out. The energy in Bronx Park on a Friday night is fantastic enough to make it hard to leave. From there, watch the sun set in the park before making your way to one of the local restaurants for dinner or end your night at a bar like Gasolina Lounge.

Rent a bike and take a few loops around Bronx Park before biking up to Van Cortlandt Park. Check out the Jerome Park Reservoir and enjoy lunch from Peter’s Deli with views of the water. Take the bus back to Allerton just in time to run errands on Allerton Avenue before closing. The high concentration of grocery stores makes shopping on a Sunday night almost enjoyable enough to categorize as an activity.

The 2 and the 5 subway lines serve the Allerton area. The BxM10 bus runs express to Manhattan. Owning a car is more realistic here than in other Bronx neighborhoods because of decent street parking and the built-in driveways many single-family homes offer.
