Around Alta Vista

Alta Vista is filled with one- and two-story family homes, many of which are historical. Expect a revitalization of the colonial style home, though most were built within the 1920s and 1930s. There are mostly 2-5 bedroom family homes, but duplexes and fourplexes are also available. Big front porches abound with plenty of live oak trees to shade the scenery. Homes in this area display a consistency in quality throughout the neighborhood, though homes in the south section are mostly larger than average. The subdivisions in the neighborhood include North Haven, Laurel Heights Addition, and Treasure Hill.

Aside from being minutes away from San Antonio's famous dining opportunities, the neighborhood of Alta Vista is not without its dining charms. Expect tacos and Vietnamese pho close by, as well as a couple of friendly neighborhood bars. For more of a fine dining experience, downtown San Antonio is only about 2 1/2 miles down the road, making it easy to utilize public transportation if you don’t feel like dealing with city traffic to have that night out to eat.

Alta Vista contains a healthy mix of San Antonians. The neighborhood is home to many middle-aged families with kids, but there are also many young professionals, students, and elderly persons. The east part of Alta Vista, along San Pedro Avenue, can be run-down it some spots, though this can vary block by block.

A real treat for a Friday night is a show at the San Pedro Playhouse. The Playhouse was founded in 1912 and was later rebuilt by the City of San Antonio. Every year the Playhouse books thousands of artists to come entertain San Antonio. After a good show, go for fine dining in the city or take it easy at one of the local bars in Alta Vista.

San Pedro Springs Park may be the pride of Alta Vista. The springs hold historical significance as the area once served as a prison after the Civil War, as well as camel stables later on. Finally, the springs were renovated into a park during the 1930s allowing residents to swim, play tennis, jog, and picnic. During the summer months, the spring-fed pool is open free to the public.
