4 CTA Transit Projects and the Chicago Neighborhoods They Will Affect
The CTA has been helping Chicagoans get around the city for more than 100 years, and the transit organization is still keeping busy with new projects. Here are three CTA developments and one public transit project that has yet to choose a developer that will have a big impact on Chicago neighborhoods.
Red Line Extension Project
As a part of the Red Ahead initiative, CTA and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have proposed a 5.3-mile extension of the Red Line that will reach from the 95th/Dan Ryan terminal to 130th Street in Riverdale. The project also includes the construction of four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, 130th Street, and Michigan Avenue, according to the CTA website. Neighborhoods affected would include Fernwood, Morgan Park, and Pullman.
“We are happy to introduce our preferred alignment for the Red Line Extension, a transformational project that will expand rail service to Chicago’s southernmost communities and create better access to jobs, education and opportunities,” CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr., said in a statement.
The project could cost approximately $2.3 billion, but funding and an exact timeline have yet to be announced.
Red and Purple Modernization Program and Belmont Flyover
Last year, the CTA held several community meetings to get feedback on its plans to redevelop the Red and Purple Line stations at Argyle, Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, and Lawrence. The CTA project will also affect the area around the train stations in neighborhoods including Edgewater, Lakeview, and Uptown. A big part of the project also includes the Belmont “flyover,” a bypass track planned for the Belmont Brown Line station.
Just last month, demolition crews started work on the flyover development, according to WGN9. A total of 10 buildings will be knocked down to make way for the flyover, which will allow the Brown Line to run over the Red and Purple Lines in an effort to cut down on rush-hour delays.
CTA TOD in Logan Square
The CTA owns the land at 2525 N. Kedzie Blvd. in Logan Square, and the agency is considering building a transit-oriented development (TOD) on the 43,154-square-foot site. The TOD, located just 600 feet away from the Logan Square Blue Line station, would be mixed-use project with residential and retail space.
Currently, the spot is occupied by a First Midwest Bank location and City Lit Books. The tenants’ leases are up March 31.
O’Hare Express Train
Last year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Infrastructure Trust began asking for proposals for an express train that could take passengers from the Loop to O’Hare in 20 minutes or less. Route options include the CTA Blue Line, the Metra North Central Line, and freight railroad lines that run through Forest Park.
Now, the developers have been narrowed down to two: Elon Musk’s The Boring Company and O’Hare Xpress LLC, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
