If you’re a cannabis user in California, you know by now that recreational marijuana was recently legalized in the Golden State. But that doesn’t mean smokers can light up wherever they want, whenever they want. Smoking marijuana is still not allowed in all public places, and landlords can still forbid their renters from smoking in their apartments (even if they’re using vaporizers).

So where can renters blaze if their landlord wants to keep it smoke-free? State law says that cannabis can only be consumed in public at dispensaries or special events. Many San Francisco residents opt for dispensaries that have smoking lounges, but there aren’t many in the city yet. In fact, there are only about a dozen lounges in the Bay Area.

If you’re looking for a place to spark up or explore the wide variety of cannabis products available today, these are the best Bay Area neighborhoods to find a 4/20-friendly space.

Urban Pharm, Releaf, and Barbary Coast, three of San Francisco’s retail marijuana dispensaries, are located in the SoMa neighborhood.

If you’re looking to find a marijuana cafe that resembles those you could frequent in Amsterdam, Barbary Coast is the one to check out. In fact, the lounge is so popular that patrons are asked to stay for no longer than half an hour and can only smoke cannabis purchased from the shop. You’ll find a separate smoking section with leather seats and velvet wallpaper, and if you close your eyes, you can pretend you’re in Amsterdam eating the city’s famous marijuana-infused treats.

Lower Haight

Burger Urge in Haight-Ashbury

There’s a reason the famous Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco is sometimes nicknamed “Hashbury.” Marijuana users visit the Lower Haight specifically to check out Sparc, a modern-looking dispensary that has the feel of your neighborhood bar. During peak hours, the tables and chairs lining the walls are filled with cannabis consumers looking for a place to smoke in peace. They also have locations in the Mission District and out in Santa Rosa.

Technically just south of Richmond District,

Smokers will gather en masse at Golden Gate Park, just south of the Richmond District, for the annual 4/20 at Hippie Hill event. This tradition, which dates back to the 1970s, brings thousands of people to the area to celebrate cannabis culture. This year’s “bud drop” at 4:20 p.m. will be particularly special, considering it will be the first time it’s actually legal.

The event is free to attend, includes a food area dubbed “Munchie Land,” and will feature retail vendors and music all day long. The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. If you need to get some supplies beforehand, stop by Harvest on Geary to check out their all-natural products and private lounge.

The Castro

The Castro offers a full selection of dispensaries for you to sample from, including The Apothecarium, a high-end medical and recreational spot, and Lifted Health & Wellness, who will deliver medical cannabis if you can’t make it in.

Local restaurant Flore also got in on the legal cannabis action with the recent introduction of a cannabis-infused cocktail menu. The list of 11 CBD-infused cocktails and four non-alcoholic mocktails are infused with popular strains such as Gorilla Grape and OG Kush.

This Oakland neighborhood is home to Magnolia, the only dispensary in the city that allows its patrons to smoke on-site. Customers can sit at tables in the salesroom and use the provided vaporizers to sample various strains.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the employees here play a similar role to bartenders at a bar. They keep an eye out for users getting a little too high, and those who get rowdy will be cut off.

They’re also home to unique events and groups meant to foster community, such as the Marijuana Farmers Market and Magnolia’s Book Club.
