If you’ve got visitors coming to San Francisco, there’s no shortage of attractions to show them. Of course, once your family and friends have toured Alcatraz, cycled over the Golden Gate Bridge, and seen the seals, you might be out of ideas.

Don’t worry about researching a custom itinerary. Neighborhoods.com has done the legwork for you. Here are some “local favorite” ideas that will give you all the history, fun, and local flair you’re after without trodding the same well-worn tourist paths.

Hike the City Hills on a Free Walking Tour

If you’re looking for a free activity that only requires a good pair of sneakers, consider taking a San Francisco Walking Tour. They’re run by local volunteers who lead groups daily around neighborhoods throughout the city. You’ll learn all about the city’s history, architecture, and neighborhood legends. Some fun tour options include The Castro: Tales of the Village or the Alfred Hitchcock Tour of San Francisco through Nob Hill and Union Square. Most tours last an hour or two and the schedule changes daily.

Play Golf in the Middle of the Mission

Golf in the middle of The Mission? It’s possible if it’s indoor mini golf at trendy Urban Putt. This is a great place to go with a group or with kids. The “course” is full of San Francisco-themed elements like a miniaturized Transamerica Pyramid and even mini Painted Ladies. There’s also a full bar and restaurant so you can enjoy some drinks before or after you putt. The vintage arcade games and photo booth found here are a great alternative to tourist-packed Pier 39.

Discover Some Secret Staircases

San Francisco is full of hidden staircases. Having guests discover them is a fun way to explore the city. For example, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps in the Inner Richmond have 163 stairs steps to ascend, so you’ll also get a bit of a workout. Plus, you can take in the beautiful (read: Instagram-worthy) mosaic along the way up and get rewarded with incredible views at the top — that is if the fog hasn’t rolled in.

Have Drinks in a Speakeasy

If you really want to impress out-of-town guests, make a reservation for drinks at Bourbon and Branch in the Tenderloin. It’s a speakeasy that’s been around since the 1920s. To enter, you need the secret password that comes in an email with your reservation. Look for a nondescript door at 501 Jones St. Once inside, you’ll be in good hands with the experienced bartenders who craft limited-batch cocktails.

See Every Pez Dispenser Ever Made

There’s no shortage of great museums in San Francisco, including the SF MOMA and California Academy of Sciences. But once you’ve seen those and you’re on the hunt for something a little more quirky, head down the peninsula to Burlingame and visit the Museum of Pez Memorabilia. It’s located in the same building as the Banned Toy Museum and Classic Toy Museum, so you’re in for plenty of kid-sized entertainment. Inside, you’ll find every Pez dispenser ever produced since 1950 (900 total) and even a life-size Pez to take photos with.

Sweat Out Toxins in a Russian Bathhouse

After enjoying the hustle and bustle of the city, adventurous visitors can enjoy spending some time relaxing at Archimedes Banya, a traditional Russian bathhouse. This massive complex in Hunter’s Point offers a spa, saunas, and steam rooms. There’s also a rooftop pool deck and restaurant serving Russian cuisine and drinks. Note: The banya is for ages 18 and up and has some clothing-optional areas. But guests can wear swimsuits if that’s more comfortable. There are also separate men’s and women’s only nights, so check the schedule before you visit.
