$95M Police and Fire Training Center Planned for Garfield Park
Mayor Rahm Emanuel revealed a plan earlier this month for a $95 million police and fire academy campus in Garfield Park. The plan includes a state-of-the-art facility that would train new Chicago recruits to be prepared for the field — and spur neighborhood revitalization.
Located at 4301 W. Chicago Ave., the 30.4-acre facility will be a place for police officers and firefighters to "receive specialized, scenario-based training, get hands-on practice in real-world situations and improve collaboration in emergency response."
The new facility will house administrative offices and classrooms on-site, as well as an auditorium, conference rooms, simulators, and labs. A driving course and skid pad for hands-on practice are also included in the plans. An additional building will have a pool for water rescue training and a shooting range.
Alderman Emma Mitts (37th) believes the construction of the facility, which is slated to begin in 2018, will add a lot to the neighborhood.
"The thousands of first-responders reporting there for training every day will not only drive economic and community development throughout the neighborhood, but also add a big public safety presence to our streets, giving children and families more confidence as they travel about their lives," Mitts said.
The campus is also slated to bring roughly 100 construction jobs to the community for the 24 to 36 months expected to build it out.
