Just because summer is over doesn't mean that we have to retreat to our couches, watching Netflix and tracking our GrubHub order until the first sign of 50-degree weather. Yes, winter is on the horizon, but all the more reason to make the most of (somewhat) comfortable weather. Here are some of the best events coming to Chicago this fall.

The Halloween Gathering (October 22)

Some of Chicago's most noteworthy and creative institutions have collaborated on this fantastic parade and festival on the Loop's lakeside. Artists from The Field Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more combine for a colorful and expressive parade. The all-day affair is a great celebration of Halloween for all ages and perfect to get you in the mood for the holiday.

Millennium Park Ice Skating (Opens November 13):

As the colder weather starts to creep in, take advantage of this unique rink. This rink is uniquely positioned, as it gives skaters excellent views of the skyline and Lake Michigan. A gray autumn day can turn into a romantic night under the city lights on this winding, meandering patch of ice.

Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (November 19-22):

Although the lights will stay on throughout the holiday season, they start in November, culminating in the annual Christmas tree lighting and fireworks over the Chicago River. A perfect event for families looking to get into the holiday spirit and spend a magical day downtown.

ZooLights at Lincoln Park (starts November 27)

The nation's lone free zoo will be decked out in a spectacular lighting arrangement through the end of 2016. There are six special events held during their run: three Family Nights, BrewLights, Adults Only and Members Only, on top of the regular nights. If you want to enjoy a few beers among animals and holiday lights or give your kids a unique zoo experience, this is the perfect event.
