Amazon Plans to Double Its Chicago Footprint
Amazon is bringing more office space and jobs to Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The e-commerce company just signed a lease to double the space of its downtown office, opened just last year, according to Crain’s.
Amazon’s downtown office, located at 227 W. Monroe St. in the Loop, is currently 35,000 square feet. More than 200 employees work out of this office. With the expanded office, Amazon will have room for as many as 400 employees. The company has not specified a hiring timeline for filling the additional office space, but Amazon does have 58 open positions now, according to the report.
The downtown office employees people in Amazon Web Services, business operations, and advertising and media.
Amazon’s announcement to grow its presence in Chicago closely follows the company’s plans for growth in the suburbs. Amazon recently opened a new fulfillment center in Romeoville. This location, which employs 1,000 people, is one nine fulfillment facilities Amazon plans to open in Illinois this year.
With the opening of new facilities in suburbs like Aurora, Monee, and Waukegan, Amazon could have as many as 8,000 employees working at its warehouses in Illinois.
