A new report from real estate data analysis company Association Evaluation found that Chicago’s suburbs have considerably more condos than the city itself, according to Loop North News. The suburbs surrounding Chicago have approximately 40,904 condo buildings with 348,159 units, while Chicago has 11,336 condo buildings with a total of 221,580 units.

“High-rise condos may create much of Chicago’s world-class downtown and North Lake Shore Drive skyline, but only about seven percent of the residential units are found in these properties,” said President of Association Evaluation Sara Benson, according to the report.

Chicago’s hottest condo neighborhoods are located close to downtown or to Lake Michigan. The report points to neighborhoods like the Gold Coast, River North, the Loop, and Lakeview. Other neighborhoods – such as Uptown, the Near West Side, and Rogers Park – have a significant number of condo buildings.

Unsurprisingly, Cook County, including Chicago, has the highest number of condos compared to six other counties. Cook County has 21,923 condo buildings and homeowner associations (HOAs) with a total 338,592 units, according to the report. The other counties included in the report are:

  • DuPage: 7,384 condo buildings and HOAs with 88,754 condos
  • Kane: 7,228 condo building and HOAs with 45,941 condos
  • Lake: 6,758 condo buildings and HOAs with 50,638 condos
  • Will: 4,817 condo buildings and HOAs with 23,724 condos
  • McHenry: 3,133 condo buildings and HOAs with 16,222 condos
  • Kendall: 1,166 condo buildings and HOAs with 5,895 condos

Condos remain popular in Chicago. Last year, 17,345 condos and townhomes were sold in the city, while 11,144 detached, single-family homes were sold, according to the report.
