D.C. Public Schools Win Grants for Community Schools Initiative
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced new awardees of D.C.’s Community School Incentive Initiative Grant. The program will implement “community school” models in public schools, both traditional and charter, during the 2017-2018 school year.
According to the mayor’s statement, a community school model is defined as “a public and private partnership to coordinate educational, developmental, family, health, and afterschool programs during school and non-school hours.” These programs, which are offered to students, families, and local community members, aim to improve academic achievement, encourage school attendance, build relationships, and broaden skills.
Education and school reform has been and continues to be a top priority for Mayor Bowser. She invested $1.74 billion of her 2018 fiscal year budget toward public education, the largest public education investment in D.C. history, according to the statement.
“When our families and communities succeed, our students succeed,” Mayor Bowser said in a statement. “As we continue to build on the progress our schools have made over the past 10 years, these grants will help us bring entire neighborhoods together under one goal — setting more students and families up for success.”
