Those who have never been to San Francisco might assume the entire city is chaotic, crowded, and all the other adjectives notoriously associated with urban areas. But locals know San Francisco has numerous neighborhoods that cater wonderfully to all kinds of households. We’ve rounded up some of the most family-friendly neighborhoods the City by the Bay has to offer.

Bernal Heights

Fun farmers markets, neighborly residents, and streets lined with greenery are just some of the things that make Bernal Heights a popular neighborhood. There are also numerous parks, a handful of playgrounds, and plenty of kid-friendly restaurants, leading Bernal Heights to be referred to as “Maternal Heights” among locals.

Glen Park

Located just west of Bernal Heights sits Glen Park, a peaceful and quiet community that is home to households of all sizes. Residents frequent the neighborhood’s Glen Canyon Park. Glen Park is also situated conveniently for access to public transportation, and it’s known among San Franciscans to be a quiet, enjoyable neighborhood.

Noe Valley

Situated just south of The Castro, Noe Valley is a central neighborhood with convenient access to much of the surrounding city. Parents wheeling strollers are a common sight in this community, and plenty of single-family homes line the streets, which is rare for neighborhoods in San Francisco. On weekends, Noe Valley’s 24th Street is a great place to visit for an array of delicious restaurants.

Potrero Hill

Potrero Hill just might be San Francisco’s best-kept secret in terms of neighborhoods. The neighborhood’s welcoming vibe has made it a popular choice among residents who don’t want to be too far from the action but also want a quiet community.

Central Richmond

Located near Golden Gate Park, Central Richmond offers much in the way of accessible perks. The neighborhood feels safe and is also home to good schools like Presidio Middle School and George Washington High School. Plus, there’s free parking on the streets, and any San Franciscan will tell you that this is a godsend.

Presidio Heights

San Francisco is well-known for its hilliness, which can make for tiring commutes, whether by foot, in a car, or on a bike. Presidio Heights is one neighborhood that stays relatively flat throughout. The neighborhood is situated near Golden Gate Park, and is also home to several schools. Laurel Heights is truly a slice of suburbia with decidedly urban surroundings.
