Redfin has released a list of the nation’s top cities for whiskey. San Francisco might not top the list, but the Bay Area city makes an appearance at No. 9.

To come up with their ranking, cities and their bars were broken down into categories such as how many times a whiskey bar was included in a best-of list, how many whiskey bars were in each city, and of the whiskey bars listed, how many were “critically loved.” With its whiskey bars offering a blend of “industrial, vintage and neighborhood hotspot vibes,” Walk Score of 86, and hidden gems located throughout, it’s no surprise that the Bay Area city earned a spot on the list.

Redfin specifically mentioned a handful of whiskey watering holes worth checking out. Here are the neighborhoods you can find them in.

Financial District

Hard Water at Pier 3 in the Financial District offers a variety of whiskey for a younger crowd, which is reflected in their bright and modern interiors. Try drinks like the Dixie or the Derby Tropical Cocktail, then stroll the Embarcadero.

Tenderloin

Bourbon and Branch is an homage to the Prohibition-era in the same location of an actual speakeasy that operated from 1921 to 1933. Try the Canadian Whiskey Crown XR (only 7,500 cases produced) and head to the secret library where you can enter only after using a password. It’s located at 501 Jones St. in the Tenderloin.

Broken Record Bar and Grill is less about ambiance and more about an endless well-stocked bar. Located at 1166 Geneva Ave. in Outer Mission.

Downtown

Burritt Room + Tavern offers a distinct shady and jazzy atmosphere with a film noir theme. Sip on reserve whiskey in a dark corner over a deep conversation in this Downtown bar.

Chinatown

Critics love Rickhouse according to Redfin. This bar is quick stroll to nearby Chinatown on 246 Kearny St. From the owners of Bourbon and Branch, this bar is all about the old Kentucky warehouses where bourbon is aged. Try a specialty punch served in a white milk glass bowl.
