Former Mesa Junior High Will Be Converted Into Huge Park
Mesa Junior High closed in 2012 and left behind a massive space just waiting for a new use. The city of Mesa has figured out exactly what it wants to do and is turning the former school grounds into a new park and recreational center, per The East Valley Tribune.
Thanks to the $70 million Parks and Recreation Bond Program passed by voters, the city will be retrofitting the space as Eagles Park. Plans call for soccer fields, a renovated gymnasium and dance room, multi-purpose community rooms, and much more.
The initial phase of the project, which costs $2.1 million, will involve the construction of new facilities and renovation of existing ones. The phase is expected to be completed this September. At that point, the second phase will commence, which includes construction of outdoor park facilities, several fields, exercise playstations, children’s play areas, and a “ninja obstacle course.”
The park will include a water collection and retention system to ensure that rain from the heavy monsoon season helps irrigate and serve the park during the summer months.
The entire park, which will cost around $6.5 million to complete, is expected to be ready for a grand opening around September 2018.
