Frisco is the Fastest Growing City in America, According to Report
Texas cities are on the fast track for economic growth.
On WalletHub’s 2017 Fastest Growing Cities in America report, four Texas cities made the top 10 out of 515 communities nationwide. While Midland came in at No. 5 and Austin at No. 9, the other two are North Texas cities in Collin County. McKinney ranked No. 6, and Frisco topped the list as the Fastest Growing City in America.
WalletHub analysts measured and compared 15 specific growth factors for each city. Frisco, which is approximately 30 miles north of Dallas, ranked No. 1 in sociodemographics, No. 27 in jobs and economy, and tied with Fort Myers, Florida for the highest job growth.
Though jobs are a key growth factor for cities, Melanie Bowers, assistant professor of political science and public policy and administration at Rutgers University-Camden, told WalletHub that people need incentives to stay in a city, and that starts with the school system.
“We’ve seen millennials flock to cities over the last decade, generating a lot of optimism about the future of urban areas, but as the oldest ones have school-aged children, we are also seeing a retreat to the suburbs,” Bowers said. “If a city wants to grow, investing in its education system is a good start.”
Frisco and McKinney have focused on creating the full lifestyle package, which attributes to their 6 percent population growth between 2015 and 2016. Last year, Frisco’s census population was 163,656 and McKinney’s was 172,298.
