There’s no question that California is huge. Despite its size, it seems that everyone flocks to the same spots for vacationing. When it comes to visiting popular areas, it can easily become crowded with bustling tourists or highly commercialized attractions. For those who just want a peaceful and relaxing trip away from the mainstream, finding the right areas might be a challenge. That is why we did the legwork for you. We came up with a list of “hidden” vacation spots that are still relatively untapped and perfect for a day or weekend trip with family or friends.

Fullerton

The beauty of this historic city is that it’s far enough away from the hustle of Los Angeles and the hordes of tourists heading towards Disneyland in Anaheim. You can admire the historical buildings, picnic in the shade underneath magnificent trees, check out the decorative sidewalks, and much more. Many locals are very forthcoming and willing to dole out suggestions to their favorite spots. There is no shortage of shopping centers, music venues, and specialty mom & pop restaurants to spend your day. Not to mention, there’s plenty of parking spaces available (a foreign concept to those living in LA).

Dana Point

Located along coast of the Pacific Ocean, Dana Point’s motto is “Harboring the Good Life.” This spot is popular with locals and is a hidden gem when it comes to enjoying water activities. Visitors can shop, go fishing, bike along scenic paths, go parasailing, or simply lay out on the beach. With over 50 specialty shops and several renowned restaurants, the city doesn’t joke around with their food. Dana Point is great for Angelenos looking for memorable seaside experiences and a low-cost weekend trip.

Rancho Palos Verdes

If you are searching for a peaceful area to enjoy a calm hike or spend a beach day away from civilization, head towards Rancho Palos Verdes. There are a number of enjoyable trails filled with lush greenery, flourishing wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Major landmarks in this neighborhood include Point Vicente Lighthouse, Abalone Cove Ecological Reserve, and notable golf courses. Be sure to visit one of the many restaurants along Terranea Way, where you can enjoy a delicious meal complete with an ocean view.

Balboa Island

Interesting fact: this island retreat off the coast of Newport Beach is man-made and was first created as a resort town for Angelenos, a development that was made possible by the town’s Pacific Electric Railroad station. Since then, it has transformed into a fun and secluded vacation spot for families willing to travel by ferry. With Balboa Island’s Fun Zone, shopping areas, and TikiBoat rides, Balboa Island provides the full resort experience. It almost makes you forget that you’re less than an hour away from Downtown LA.

La Quinta

With over 20 golf courses, it’s no wonder why the city hosts several prominent tournaments every year including The Skins Game, Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, The Grand Slam of Golf, and The Legends of Golf. However, during its off-season, visitors can stay at a local resort, admire the town’s picturesque mountain views, go shopping, or take a dip in the pool. Think Palm Springs, but only quieter and less commercialized.

Guerneville

This little-known town in Sonoma Valley was created in the late 1800s as a logging community. Throughout the years, it has transformed into a fun vacation destination for those who appreciate camping activities, flourishing landscapes, nearby wine tasting, and a laid-back mindset. This neighborhood hosts several LGBT-friendly events such as the Sonoma County Pride Parade, Polar Bear Weekend, and Women’s Weekend.

Santa Cruz

This city offers visitors a bit of everything including amusement parks, abundant outdoor recreation, and ocean activities. Santa Cruz is best known for its large surfing community — it was even mentioned in the Beach Boys song, “Surfin’ U.S.A.” Head towards Pacific Avenue in Downtown Santa Cruz to check out the bustling stores and various businesses. The talented street performers, artists, and musicians are sure to keep you entertained during your visit.

Ojai

Ojai may be the right hidden destination for you if you’re looking to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle. The culture is deeply embedded in healthy living, organic agriculture, serene mindsets, and inspiring arts. No matter which direction you want to head towards, there are plenty of recreational options. Major landmarks that surround the city include Los Padres National Forest for backcountry hikers, Matilija Creek for waterfalls and hot springs, and Lake Casitas for camping and picnicking.
