Lawsuit Over Land Sale for David Beckham Soccer Stadium Dismissed
A lawsuit aimed at challenging the sale of county-owned land in Overtown for the construction of a soccer stadium — which has caused consternation among residents — has been dismissed by a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge, per The Real Deal.
Activist and landowner Bruce Matheson filed the lawsuit earlier this year, saying the land sale breaks Florida state law because it wasn’t offered to other bidders. Matheson offered to buy the land under the same terms and for the same price. The county approved the sale of the 3-acre site for $9 million earlier in the year to Miami Beckham United for construction of the 25,000-square-foot stadium. Well-known soccer player David Beckham is among those working on stadium plans.
The county argued that the state’s economic development law protects the county because it gives municipalities the right to sell property if it benefits the economy. Given the complexity of the law, Judge Rodolfo Ruiz said he expects his ruling to be appealed.
Beckham outlined his stadium plans to Major League Soccer owners in August. Under provisions of the land sale, at least $175 million must be spent on the stadium’s construction.
