According to a report from KPCC, Los Angeles World Airports (LAX) will use eminent domain to clear out the nearby Manchester Square neighborhood to make room for expansion plans aimed at alleviating the area’s traffic issues.

Back in June, the airport board voted to forcibly take the homes in the small neighborhood, says KPCC. However, that’s still pending final approval from the Los Angeles City Council in August (an approval that’s expected to go through). Of the properties in Manchester Square, 26 have sold already since June, but the 37 are holdouts are the targets of the eminent domain action.

Eminent domain is far from a common practice in Los Angeles, but one being employed here to serve the airport — a public facility. Metro voted to use eminent domain in Little Tokyo back in 2013, and the Owens Valley is currently pursuing eminent domain to take back its water from LA.

Once LAX is in possession of the final properties in Manchester Square, it can proceed with the rest of its additions, all aimed at parking and transportation. A new LAX Metro Station is planned, as well as the addition of an automated people mover and a central parking lot. LAX currently utilizes lots scattered all around the surrounding neighborhood for both short- and long-term parking needs.
