MahoganyBooks Will Be Anacostia's First Bookstore in Over Two Decades
MahoganyBooks is slated to open at the Anacostia Arts Center on Nov. 24, according to a Curbed D.C. report. This will be the first bookstore in D.C.’s Anacostia neighborhood in over 20 years.
MahoganyBooks was originally founded in 2007 as an online bookstore specializing in African Diaspora literature. Its Anacostia location is expected to host book events with authors as well as live-streamed events. It will also introduce a long-term pop-up Duende District, which is a mobile bookstore by and for people of color.
“It is important we create a rich, concerted space where readers and writers connect and discuss issues of yesterday and today that impact our culture and how we see ourselves,” MahoganyBooks co-founder Derrick Young said in a statement.
Located at 1231 Good Hope Road SE, the Anacostia Arts Center provides a community space for cultural organizations, small businesses, and artists. The center aims to revitalize and sustain economic development in historic Anacostia.
