Map Released for Elon Musk's Proposed Tunnels Network Under LA
Earlier this year, Elon Musk announced a bizarre plan to build underground tunnels in Los Angeles as a solution to the city’s notorious gridlock traffic. Since then, the visionary has partnered up with the Boring Company to construct a two-mile test tunnel underneath the city.
Although the plan initially raised several questions for Angelenos, it looks like the tunnels are really happening. According to Curbed LA, the city has received a first draft map of Musk’s underground tunnels in a plan called “Loop.”
The basic idea of Musk’s tunnel project involves cars parking at a street-level lift station before being lowered underground. Vehicles would be transported across the city traveling up to 150 mph, bypassing traffic and arriving at their destination in style.
The updated map, released by the Boring Company, includes tunnels that would ferry vehicles from Long Beach Airport to Sherman Oaks, or from LAX to Dodger Stadium in DTLA. There are also smaller stations outlined in various neighborhoods, including Santa Monica, Hawthorne, South Bay, Leimert Park, South LA, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Venice, and Union Station.
The project plans call for two phases of construction. The first would build a 6.5-mile tunnel below the 405 freeway that would travel between West LA, Culver City, and Inglewood. The second phase would involve creating smaller stops for popular destinations, such as LA Live and the future NFL Stadium in Inglewood. However, details for this portion of the project will be hashed out through feedback from the community.
Still in preliminary stages, the new underground network will only be used for testing for now.
