Microsoft Purchases Land in San Jose, Adds to Growing List of Tech Offices
Microsoft recently purchased 65 acres of mostly undeveloped land in San Jose, the latest sign of the city’s recent technology resurgence.
The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant spent approximately $73 million to snap up the property, located north of Highway 237 between Zanker Road and Coyote Creek. The plot of land was previously a pear orchard and was also used for farming.
Microsoft already has a presence in the Bay Area, with offices in San Francisco and Mountain View. According to a San Francisco Chronicle report, the Mountain View office employs 1,668 people. Microsoft has not yet announced how many jobs it will add in San Jose.
Microsoft is one of multiple tech companies that have recently picked up properties and plots of land in San Jose, where real estate costs are cheaper than those in San Francisco. Google has purchased several properties in San Jose for a transit village at Diridon Station in Downtown San Jose. Apple also received the go-ahead to develop up to 4.15 million square feet of office space in North San Jose over the next 15 years.
