New Condos Coming to Site of Harvey Milk's Historic Election Celebration
Plans to develop historic San Francisco bar Lucky 13, formerly known as the infamous Alphie’s, have been granted an exemption from an extensive environmental review. That clears the way for — what else? — condo plans.
Per Socketsite, plans have been submitted to the San Francisco Planning Department to demolish the one-level commercial building occupied by Lucky 13 and its adjoining patio for a new five-story, 55-foot tall mixed-use building. This new structure would include 27 condo units, 1,600 square feet of commercial space, and storage space for 29 bikes.
The Duboce Triangle site has an interesting history. It was one of the original 18 clubhouses built for Woodmen of the World, a fraternal society of woodworkers in the early 1900s. An inscription on the bar’s facade still reads “W.O.W 1906.” The building also has ties to LGBT history as a meeting location for city supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to public office in California. When he was elected, the victory party was held here.
There was hopes that the historic building could be incorporated into development designs, but it looks like that won’t be the case after all.
