New Renderings for San Diego's 'SoccerCity' Includes NFL Stadium
Last month, FS Investors unveiled a gaudy plan to turn the Mission Valley property that currently includes Qualcomm Stadium into a massive, mixed-use, transit-oriented development.
The stated goal of the development would be to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to San Diego and build accordingly around that. However, the possibility of also including an NFL stadium was also floated in the original plans. Interest in that part of the proposal must be high because FS has now unveiled a new rendering that shows what it would look like if a pro football stadium was included.
The plans for SoccerCity call for 55 acres of parkland, a 22,000-32,000-seat stadium for a Major League Soccer team possibly shared with San Diego State University, 4,800 new homes, over three million square feet of office and retail space, and two hotels.
The proposal calls for FS Investors to lease 80 acres of the site and then purchase it in phases based on the city's appraisals of land value. San Diego voters will then have to sign off on a ballot initiative, and then the City Council will be asked to approve it in order to meet the MLS deadline for new franchise approvals.
