Pedestrian Park Under L Train Tracks Planned for Chicago's Lakeview
Emulating New York’s “High Line” rails-to-trails project, a plan to create a half-mile long linear park and walkway under the Brown Line L Train tracks—referred to as the “Low-Line”—in Lakeview is moving forward. The project team held a meeting March 28 to solicit community feedback on the project.
The park would extend from Southport Avenue to Paulina Street and include pedestrian pathways, landscaping, and other public amenities. The idea stems from the 2011 Lakeview Area Master Plan created by Special Service Area (SSA) No. 27 and the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce. Part of that plan lead to the creation of the Low-Line Plaza, a space for a farmers market under the tracks.
As Curbed Chicago points out, this isn’t the only project underway that seeks to make over space under L tracks: In Uptown, the “Underline” will create a pedestrian corridor under the Wilson Red Line stop.
