French architect Agence Ter and Los Angeles-based firm Gruen Associates have recently released updated renderings for a major revamp of Pershing Square in DTLA. The elegant design was selected as a winner in last year’s competition organized by City Councilman Jose Huizar, who represents the Downtown area, and the nonprofit organization Pershing Square Renew.

Although the original design was a simple one, it hit a few roadblocks due to technicalities and regulations from the city. For the past few months, the firms have designed an updated plan that would adhere to the city’s requirements.

According to Curbed LA, several essential aspects of the design, including its “great lawn, pergola, gardens, and promenade” will still be part of the revamp along with its theme of “radical flatness.” However, the updated renderings call for a bit of rearrangement. Other changes include adding a garden-filled “step” nearby the Hill Street corner of the park, rather than having the garden flow into the parking garage.

The firm also plans on chopping off the top five feet of the parking garage and lower the current park surface to sidewalk level.

Both Agence Ter and Gruen Associates aim to complete its planning phase by spring 2018. The redesign of Pershing Square project has already received approximately $3.5 million in funding through developer fees and the city’s Board of Public Works.
