Phase One of New Sports Park Opens in Orange County Great Park
On August 5, the City of Irvine officially opened the first phase of Orange County Great Park’s Sports Park. The 53-acre area is less than a third of the plans for the finished sports park, which is set to occupy 194 acres upon completion.
Included in this initial unveiling are a 2,500-seat soccer stadium, six soccer fields, a 25-court tennis complex, five sand volleyball courts, and a children’s play area. Irvine has stated that the full buildout of Orange County Great Park will eventually result in over 1,300 acres of public open space.
This the latest move in a string of developments around Great Park, which has recently looked to invest considerable resources in and around the Cultural Terrace portion of the park. Considerations around museums, trails, and amphitheaters (among other amenities) are all on the table. Wild Rivers Water Park is already slated to return to Irvine at Great Park in 2019.
