Scottsdale will soon be the location of two 150-foot towers as a recent decision by City Council has rezoned height restrictions, according to Phoenix Biz Journals.

The 5-2 vote comes one month after 300 residents, many of whom lived in Scottsdale Waterfront and Optima Camelview Village condominiums, filed a petition against the Scottsdale Fashion Square expansion. However, the council sided with the 20 or so people who spoke in support of the building extension, reports AZ Central.

Fashion Square, owned by Santa Monica-based Macerich, is a major contributor to the downtown region sales tax revenue, generating 71 percent of the total intake, making it understandably important to the economy. It’s currently home to major retailers such as Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Neiman Marcus, and Macy’s, as well as a Harkins Theatres complex.

The only remaining question is what’s going to become of all that towering space?

In December, plans were submitted with wide-ranging uses for the new buildings that included high-end residential units, a new hotel, and office spaces. As recently as Aug. 29th, land-use attorney John Berry, who represents the owner, stated the plans were left purposefully broad and that “condos, apartments, hotels, or a combination of the three” could be developed.

Though the height extension passed without definitive plans, Macerich will have to present plans for the site south of Highland Avenue, between Goldwater Boulevard and Scottsdale Road, to the Development Review Board. They vow to listen to “community input as future proposals move through the Development Review Board.”

In return for the height extension, Macerich will provide $750,000 to a city trust fund for cultural improvements in Downtown Scottsdale.
