San Francisco Restaurants and Bars with All-Season Patios
If you live in San Francisco, you always can count on the weather to be a bit unpredictable. Even when it’s sunny outside, it might be windy or cold in the shade. And from December to March, you need to experiment with several layers before figuring out the appropriate way to dress.
Still, that doesn’t mean you want to spend all your time indoors. You are in Northern California, after all. When you’re in the mood to hang out outside, but the air feels a bit nippy, a restaurant patio that’s designed for all seasons is the perfect solution. The patios listed below are made for the Bay Area’s temperamental weather. They’re equipped with heat lamps, fire pits, and more, so there’s no need to move your meal or beverage inside.
Mars Bar and Restaurant - SoMa
The motto at Mars Bar and Restaurant, a popular SoMa hangout, is “every day is a great day to be at Mars Bar.” Thanks to the addition of their heated patio space, every day is a great day to be outside there, too.
The green, plant-covered patio is domed and covered, so it can handle all the elements. It’s dog-friendly, too, so expect plenty of pooches to be lounging about. On the menu, you’ll find bar favorites like buffalo wings, burgers, and onion rings. There’s often music on the weekends, so come early to secure an outdoor spot.
Starbelly - The Castro
If brunching or lunching on a wood-panel patio where you want to see and be seen is your idea of a happy place, you’ll love Starbelly. Located in The Castro, Starbelly keeps the patio heaters blasting so you can enjoy your quinoa salads and challah French toast sans chill.
There’s also beer and wine to enjoy. It does get fairly crowded, so reservations are highly recommended. Just specify that you are looking to get seated outdoors when you book your table.
STEM Kitchen and Garden - Mission Bay
Can’t get enough Bay views but hate how chilly it gets the second the sun goes down? Spend an evening feeling cozy around a fire pit or on a heated patio at STEM in Mission Bay.
It’s a bar, open kitchen, and garden overseen by Bon Appetit Management Company, so everything on the menu is garden-to-table fresh. Try your hand at bocce on one of the courts or just have a glass of wine by the fire.
Beach Chalet Brewery - Outer Richmond
Imagine all those times when you’ve got a group together to grab a few brews over the weekend. You’re looking for a spot where you won’t need to run for cover because of a little fog in the Outer Richmond. The solution is to head to the giant patio at the Beach Chalet Brewery.
It’s the perfect location inside Golden Gate Park to enjoy some nature while you huddle around a heating lamp to stay warm. Beer is brewed on site and the menu includes all the typical pub fare, plus some upscale options like seafood deviled eggs and ahi tuna poke.
Isa Restaurant - Marina
During those damp, winter months when you could use a pick-me-up, head to Isa Restaurant in the Marina. They’ve got a covered and heated patio that’s perfect for groups, parties, or anytime, really. The menu is upscale California-French focused, so you’ll enjoy oysters, Dungeness crab, seared scallops, and an expertly put together cheese plate. Wine, beer, and cocktails are also on the menu to round out your experience
