The first new San Francisco park in over a decade is officially open in the Mission District.

Per Hoodline SF, In Chan Kaajal Park (which means “my little village” or “my little town” in Mayan) features over 31,000 square feet of recreational space. The public space cost about $5.2 million to complete and, after delays due to weather, took 10 years to become a reality.

The name, In Chan Kaajal Park, was chosen by community members at a meeting earlier this year. City officials and residents consider the name a reflection of the large Mayan culture in the neighborhood.

In Chan Kaajal Park features an adult workout space, swings, an interactive water plaza, a jungle gym, slide, community garden, and a large open field with a small stage. The water plaza was designed to commemorate Mission Creek, which once flowed through the site.

Local businesses completed over 15 percent of the work of creating the park, as promised by Rec and Park.

The park is located at 17th and Folsom Streets and is open to the public daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
