See Renderings of Long Beach's $250 Million 'Queen Mary Island' Complex
The docked Queen Mary ocean liner has been a tourism hit for Long Beach, CA over the years. However, time and disrepair are both catching up with the boat, and a recent report suggested it will cost as much as $289 million to get the ship back up to snuff. That’s a tough ask of taxpayers and the city but perhaps there’s another way to raise that kind of money.
Real estate firm Urban Commons, which operates the surrounding area on behalf of the city, has a plan. They unveiled plans to create a $250 million entertainment complex along the 65 acres of waterfront surrounding the Queen Mary. Recently, they showed off renderings of what that might look like, courtesy of Gensler.
"Queen Mary Island” would include a 2,400-foot boardwalk, 200-room hotel, and almost 700,000 square feet of retail as well as cafes and bars. An amphitheater and 150,000-square-foot "multi-activity concept" would provide entertainment, the latter of which could provide some form of extreme sports such as an ice climbing wall, zip lining, or indoor surfing pool.
The idea is that revenue from the complex could help pay for renovations to the Queen Mary, which itself is a hotel and event space.
If approved, the project could break ground in two years or so. Fingers crossed that the ship holds on until then.
