'Shameless' in Chicago: The Neighborhoods on Screen and Visited by the Stars
While the Showtime series “Shameless” is set on Chicago’s South Side, most scenes are actually filmed in Los Angeles. But the debauched Gallagher family and supporting crew from the show have been seen around town in Chicago. The Chicago Tribune gathered all of the sightings of the actors filming and enjoying the dining and cultural scene of the city.
Check out the eight neighborhoods where the stars were seen.
Chinatown
The Chicago Tribune reported that the stars were set to film at Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown. But the “Shameless” cast is not the only recent news putting the neighborhood in the spotlight. Developer Related Midwest is bringing The 78 to a parcel bordered by Ping Tom Memorial Park, connecting Chinatown to the South Loop and creating a whole new Chicago neighborhood.
River North
During their time in the city, several “Shameless” actors explored River North. Courtney Cox, seen filming with the show, ate out at RPM Italian, according to the Chicago Tribune. Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher) and Ethan Cutkosky (Carl Gallagher) tried out Blind Dragon Chicago, and the Tribune also reported Cutkosky was seen at River North’s Siena Tavern.
Wrigleyville
In one of the more high-profile “Shameless” appearances in town, Monaghan, Cutkosky, Shanola Hampton (Veronica Fisher), and Jeremy Allen White (Lip Gallagher) recently headed to Wrigleyville to throw the opening pitch at Wrigley Field.
The Loop
Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher) made several stop in the Loop during the “Shameless” crew’s time in Chicago. She filmed on the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago with her on-screen father William H. Macy (Frank Gallagher), visited the John Singer Sargent exhibit at the museum, and ate at Beatrix, the Chicago Tribune reports. In other dining news, Hampton and Steve Howey (Kevin Ball) were seen eating at steakhouse Prime & Provisions. The cast was also expected to film scenes for the show on the Loop’s Riverwalk.
South Loop
The Art Institute of Chicago wasn’t the only cultural institution visited by a member of the “Shameless” cast. Rossum went to Museum Campus in the South Loop to explore the Shedd Aquarium where the aquarium’s female anaconda caught her eye. She tweeted at the Shedd calling for Fiona to be the snake’s new nickname.
West Loop
The Chicago Tribune reported that the show’s crew was spotted at Union Station in the West Loop. However, the train station could look very different than any shots caught in the ninth season of “Shameless.” The station is undergoing a six-year, $1 billion redevelopment project. The revamp will bring the addition of millions of square feet of retail, residential, office, and hotel space to the station.
Streeterville
Keep an eye out for shots of Navy Pier in the upcoming season of the show. The Chicago Tribune reported that cast was expected to shoot scenes at the Streeterville spot. If “Shameless” fans want to visit the iconic Chicago entertainment venue, they’ll have somewhere to stay soon. Navy Pier is getting its first ever hotel, a part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. The seven-story, 222-room hotel broke ground in July, according to CBS Chicago. The hotel will have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over Lake Michigan and feature a 30,000-square-foot rooftop bar.
North Lawndale
In the upcoming season of the show, Frank Gallagher is set to get involved in politics on the South Side of Chicago, the Tribune reports. Viewers can expect to see Crown Elementary School in the South Side neighborhood of North Lawndale as a polling place.
This won’t be the last time North Lawndale makes a television appearance. Earlier this year, the Chicago City Council gave Cinespace Chicago Film Studios approval to create a backlot by its existing indoor soundstage buildings in the neighborhood. The film studio will take over two one-block stretches in the neighborhood for the 60-acre backlot, which means Cinespace could do outdoor production on television shows and movies.
