The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in the Bay Area
Just because you’re hitting the beach this weekend that doesn’t mean you have to leave your dog at home. Bring your pup along to the best dog-friendly beaches in the Bay Area. Your furry friend can enjoy some off-leash fun, and you’ll be able to soak up the sun and relax. Play fetch, go for a stroll, or hike together along the ocean cliffs.
For a day-trip destination that’s perfect for humans and dogs alike, check out these dog-friendly beaches across the Bay Area.
Kehoe Beach - Inverness
One of the most beautiful sections of the impressive Point Reyes National Seashore, Kehoe Beach in Inverness is pet-friendly in certain parts. The half-mile trail leading to the beach is so pretty that everyone — from your exercise-averse friend to your lazy couch-potato pup — will enjoy it. Admire the wildflowers and rolling hills along your stroll, and be sure to pack a picnic to enjoy in the sand (there aren’t many restaurant options in the vicinity).
Baker Beach - Sea Cliff, San Francisco
This popular San Francisco beach off the Sea Cliff neighborhood attracts its fair share of sunbathers and beach bums, and that’s largely due to its perfect location. Sitting on the sands of Baker Beach, you’ll get gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the perfect setting to capture that Instagram-worthy shot. FYI, if you (or your dog) have a problem with seeing a bunch of strangers in the nude, don’t trek to the north end of the beach.
Buchanan Beach - Albany
Buchanan Beach in Albany is a hidden gem that many dog owners in the Bay Area have probably never even heard of. While it’s not a huge beach, it’s the perfect spot to take your dog when you’re both a little bored of walking circles around the neighborhood. Dogs are allowed to be off-leash here and they’ll enjoy frolicking in the sand and splashing in the water. Afterward, you can take the trail to Albany Bulb, a dog-friendly spot that’s another Bay Area gem.
Esplanade Beach - Pacifica
Located in Pacifica, Esplanade Beach is a scenic spot just 20 minutes from San Francisco. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and get a little privacy as well — the beach feels quite enclosed, so you won’t have to worry much about your dog running off. Be sure to pack a light layer as it gets chilly here at night, but the sunsets are definitely worth staying for.
Fort Funston - Lakeshore, San Francisco
This gorgeous beach in the Lakeshore area of San Francisco is frequently known by its nickname, “Doggie Disneyland.” That name is quite accurate given how many dogs and their owners frequent this beach. Be prepared for a pretty strenuous walk to get to the Fort Funston beach, but if you and your dog can handle it, we’re sure you won’t mind the scenic views along the way.
Limantour Beach - Point Reyes Station
This pup-friendly section of the Point Reyes National Seashore in Point Reyes Station is pretty peaceful year-round. It’s one of the lesser known and less popular — but no less beautiful — parts of the shoreline. You won’t have to worry about your furry friend getting into trouble with other dogs since you won’t be sharing the shore with quite as many people and animals as you would at other Bay Area beaches.
Crissy Field - Presidio, San Francisco
A favorite among San Francisco residents, Crissy Field close to Presidio is the perfect spot for you to lounge in the sand while watching your pup play in the waves. You can also enjoy some legal fishing without a license at Torpedo Wharf while your dog keeps you company. Keep in mind that in the Wildlife Protection Area of Crissy Field, dogs are required to have leashes on, except between May 15 and July 1.
