According to The Coffee Club, coffee is the second most popular beverage in the world, only to water. One Harvard study says 54 percent of Americans over the age of 18 drink at least one cup of coffee daily, spending over $40 billion on the bean each year, and others studies show drinking daily coffee may help reduce illnesses ranging from cancer to Alzheimer’s.

However, Phoenix residents may be concerned more with flavor, innovation, selection, and cafe ambiance than health effects, and there are areas around Phoenix that bespeak the essential coffee-lover’s commune. Whether you are a serious coffee drinker looking for the perfect venti, nonfat, quad-shot, one-pump, no-whip mocha or just want a cup of black coffee, Neighborhoods.com has put together a list of the most caffeine-worthy neighborhoods to check out in Phoenix.

Roosevelt Row

The creative district of Roosevelt Row is known for art and cultural events, galleries, and eclectic eateries, also includes coffee houses that are equally as hip. Here, cafes are busy morning to night with people chatting in corner booths, creatives gathering to discuss upcoming projects, or people just stopping by for a snack or quick cup.

Northeast Valley News suggests several places to check out, including Songbird Coffee and Tea House at 812 North 3rd St. Beloved for their lattes, they showcase local artists’ work and feature desert-inspired flavors (like agave) to add to expressos and macchiatos.

One coffee hub not mentioned on the list is Jobot Coffee and Bar. The quintessential hangout for music lovers and coffee drinkers alike their Sunday “Beats and Brunch” features a DJ and, of course, coffee by Cartel Coffee Lab. Try their Sunrise — an unexpected orange juice/espresso combo creating two distinct levels of beverage in one glass.

Downtown Tempe

The college crowd knows a good coffee scene when they see one and that’s why you can find multiple cafes catering to the studious and nocturnal crowd in Downtown Tempe. The area is already bursting with liveliness with people cycling the streets, visitors taking advantage of nearby Tempe Lake, and a booming downtown that saw rejuvenation over the last five years.

Their coffee scene is no different, and places like Press Coffee and Infusion Coffee and Tea offer a variety of places to chill or study while providing an array of caffeinated beverages. Off the beaten path, 1865 Coffee is unbeknownst to even some locals. This little shop lives by the motto “Doing the Roast Good” by serving the best fair trade coffee from Vietnam and donating proceeds to world services and the ARC. Leave it to millennials to save the world while drinking coffee one cup at a time.

Old Town Scottsdale

Old Town offers a laid back atmosphere with plenty of boutique shops, museums, and restaurants that keep locals and tourists entertained, but the area is also a coffee hub with several independent cafes reflecting the area’s support of the arts.

Berdina’s was touted by Phoenix New Times as the only places Arizona the sells Rococo Chocolates (made in England). They serve Ritual coffee from San Francisco and are known for their cold brews, expressos, and macchiatos. Other favorites are Echo Coffee that relies on curiosity instead of a board listing coffee choices to insight conversation, and Sip Coffee and Beer House where live bluegrass and folk bands illuminate the vibe while patrons sip on unique liquor infused espresso/coffee drinks.

Biltmore

The upscale area of Biltmore surrounded by two 18 hole championship golf courses and the acclaimed Arizona Biltmore Hotel exudes affluence. Here, people spend their time shopping at high-end retailers at the Biltmore Fashion Park or dining at one of the trendy eateries, but the area also has an influx of swanky coffee houses, where people-watching and paper-reading have become a pastime.

A cluster of cafes can be found along East Camelback Road. Allegro Coffee CompanyHumphreys Kitchen and Koffee, and Press Coffee Roasters offer smooth ambiance and a wide selection of specialty coffee drinks. Knowing where to get a deal on coffee in the area is appreciated. Beloved for their iced and hot gourmet coffee and coffee art that has become synonymous with their brand, try Hava Java for $0.25 refills all day for brewed coffee and 1/2 price refills for all barista made beverages.

In a specific stretch of streets referred to as “Between the Sevens” by locals, encompassing the area between Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue from Roosevelt to Camelback, is a hotbed of restaurants and coffee shops that serve the more than 60,000 employed in the three-mile radius. And while it also incorporates several neighborhoods, such as Downtown, Uptown, and Central Phoenix, there never seems to be a shortage of coffee houses.

Giant Coffee offers a varying daily drip with an homage to specialty drinks like their honey vanilla latte. Lola Coffee offers your range of prepared coffee drinks — try the Matador, a spiced cinnamon and mocha concoction, while Lux Coffee has become a staple for locals at almost all hours of the day.
