The Force is Strong With San Diego for Naming 'Mark Hamill Drive'
Back in February when the wounds from the Chargers leaving San Diego were still fresh, a movement began to rename Charger Boulevard in the Clairemont neighborhood. The proposal called for the seven-block street to be renamed for Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, who lived in the neighborhood and attended school for a few years as a boy.
The thing is, Charger Boulevard wasn’t named for the football team, so it was kind of silly to change the name. However, Councilman Chris Cate was on board with finding a way to honor the “Star Wars” actor. So instead, the city will rename Castleton Drive, the street Hamill actually lived on, “Mark Hamill Drive.”
Hamill took to Twitter to celebrate the street-naming, about which he says, “I’m so honored!” According to the San Diego News-Tribune, he’s also agreed to show up for the unveiling, the date of which is TBD. Officially, the street will continue to be known as Castleton, but two honorary markers will be erected at the intersection of Mt. Abernathy and Castleton, where Hamill’s childhood home stands.
May the Force be with all Hamill Drive drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
