Around Brighton
The majority of the neighborhood streets feature modest single-family homes. South Holly Street between 42nd Avenue and South Rainier Avenue is a tranquil street with well-kept Cape Cod and Craftsman-style homes on spacious lots with large shady trees. Othello Playground on South Othello Street offers residents great outdoor space with walking trails, an open meadow, a children’s playground, and a hillside slide.
Brighton’s diverse community is reflected in its vibrant restaurant scene and offers a variety of culinary options, mostly on Martin Luther King Jr Way S and Rainier Avenue South. A long-time favorite, Mama Sambusa Kitchen serves traditional East African fare in a welcoming environment. For one of the best steak sandwiches this side of Philly, head to King Philly Cheesesteaks. At the Othello Station, local favorite, Bang Bang Kitchen serves hatch chili-infused burritos and mac and cheese so good most don’t realize it’s vegan.
One of Brighton’s most interesting features is the array of architecture throughout the area. Within the neighborhood, there is a stunning Buddhist temple, a stately brick Jewish Orthodox temple, and numerous peaked Christian churches of varying styles and denominations. Throughout the neighborhood, there is also a series of beautifully painted Craftsman-style homes that seem to brighten even the dreariest of Seattle days.
Although Brighton doesn’t have many nightlife options, there are still a few places where you can go to get your weekend started. Enjoy a lavish multi-course dinner at Archipelago, a small eatery serving Pacific Northwest cuisine with a Filipino twist. Check out some live music at the Royal Room or Rumba Notes Lounge in nearby Colombia City. Head to Lottie’s Lounge for a stiff drink in a funky old hotel or take the light rail into downtown for a late-night urban adventure.
Take the family for some outdoor fun at Othello Playground. You can also plan a day trip to beautiful Seward Park, which is a short drive away from Brighton. The 300-acre park on Bailey’s Peninsula features an old forest with trees over two hundred years old. Aside from the beaches on Lake Washington, there are many hiking trails, tennis courts, an amphitheater, and an art studio. Its 50 feet of shoreline offers numerous areas for swimming, fishing, and boating. The Seward Park Audubon Society offers several events and talks on the many species of birds in the area as well as classes on creating native gardens to attract birds and butterflies.
One of the draws of living in this neighborhood is the access to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail that runs south from Sea-Tac Airport north to Downtown Seattle, east to Capitol Hill, and to the University District. The Othello Station is located just blocks from Brighton, making commuting a breeze. King County Transit bus line 106 also travels north to downtown or south to Renton. Transit bus line 50 takes riders north to SODO then west to West Seattle.
