San Francisco Attractions
Although San Francisco has "big-city" attractions, it's actually quite small in size at about 49 square miles, so it doesn't feel overwhelming. The most notable attraction in the city is the Golden Gate Bridge. Walk, drive, or bike down its 1.7-mile span to get amazing views of the city. No visit is complete until you visit "The Rock," also known as Alcatraz. This legendary former prison is situated on an island in the San Francisco Bay and offers daily tours where you can visit the cells of notorious inmates from the past. Watch a group of sea lions swim near Pier 39, the bustling waterfront marketplace in Fisherman's Wharf, or throw a Frisbee around in Golden Gate Park where you'll also see beautiful botanical gardens and greenery, including the Japanese Tea Garden or Conservatory of Flowers. Stroll through neighborhoods like Castro and Chinatown to witness a variety of culture or take pictures of the famous "Painted Ladies," which are iconic homes near Alamo Square that display historic Victorian and Edwardian architectural styles.
