Around Capitol Hill
With Volunteer Park serving as its crown jewel, the northern half of Capitol Hill is more suburban and residential with a lot of parks and quiet spaces. Meanwhile, the lower southern half tends to be much livelier and urban with plenty of things to see and do. Not surprisingly, some of the area’s most amazing condos are located right along the freeway with incredible views of Puget Sound and Downtown Seattle.
There are three main areas to find the best places to eat on Capitol Hill: Broadway, 15th Street, and Olive Way. On Broadway, you’ll find an eclectic mix of fine dining and bars. The Star Fusion & Bar offers a mix of Mongolian and Japanese fare and you’ll find amazing multi-course Italian meals at Altura on Broadway. For more casual Italian fare, you’ll want to visit Olympia Pizza and Spaghetti House off 15th Street. Just a few doors down from there you’ll find the seafood specialty Coastal Kitchen, which gets good reviews. Camelos Tacos down on Olive Way is another local favorite too.
You’ll find artistic displays up and down Broadway featuring unique touches such as the bronze dance steps embedded in the sidewalks. Capitol Hill also has an elegant side as well. A Victorian glass conservatory serves as the centerpiece of Volunteer Park, which showcases a variety of tropical and subtropical plants. The Seattle Asian Art Museum and an amphitheater are also located there. The Washington Park Arboretum also offers a rare Japanese Garden experience.
Nightlife entertainment is easily found within Capitol Hill with a variety of clubs, bars, and theaters all within walking distance from each other. Built in 1925, the iconic and beautiful Egyptian Theater as well as the Northwest Film Forum, regularly host special events and present independent film showings. Known as “Capitol Hill's friendly neighborhood dive bar/arcade/gamer store,” the Raygun Lounge offers drinks, board games, card games, and pinball as well as bar food within a lively environment.
Visiting Glo’s Coffee Shop for breakfast is a perfect way to start the day. Then, make your way to the Elliott Bay Bookstore, which offers a large variety of new and used books. You can also make a trip under the freeway to the I-5 Colonnade Off-Leash Area and enjoy some time with your pup. After, make your way to Streissguth Gardens, which offers amazing views of Lake Union, Downtown Seattle, and the Olympic Mountains—and they even offer two hours of free Wi-Fi.
In addition to being extremely walkable and bikeable, Capitol Hill offers plenty of public transportation options. Located at 10th Avenue East, you can hop on a Seattle Metro bus, the First Hill Streetcar or Sound Transit’s light rail at the Capitol Hill Station. Currently, the light rail train only offers transportation to Downtown Seattle, but will soon offer transportation to Northgate later this year.
