Around Coronado
The closer you get to 7th Street on the western boundary of the district, the closer you are to Phoenix's commercial buildings and employers. Dominant architectural styles include bungalows, Tudor, and Spanish revivals. You'll also find a sprinkling of ranch-style homes throughout the neighborhood that were built after the 1930s. Yards are well kept and trees are mature. Most of the Coronado neighborhood falls into Phoenix's zoning overlay for historic preservation guidelines, which protects all property owners within this district.
Coronado boasts plenty of trendy gourmet coffee shops and deli-style eateries within walking distance a few blocks to the west. A local eatery on 12th Street is a neighborhood favorite for breakfast and lunch and has a fresh, diverse menu with a wide selection of vegetarian dishes. Locals enjoy acclaimed authentic Mexican food at several restaurants on this neighborhood's eastern boundary. Most of Coronado's eateries are located on 7th Street, the neighborhood's westernmost street.
When the neighborhood was originally developed, streetcars were the main mode of transportation and, when garages were necessary, they were placed at the back of the lot. Recent homebuyers have snapped up these properties and use them as artist studies or home offices. As the emerging artisan district in Phoenix and since it's close to an Arizona State University campus, the street scene in this area is vibrant and diverse. The district participates in an annual home tour open to the public, along with a "chalk the block" event where people have license to decorate the sidewalks, streets, and driveways. The neighborhood has a community vegetable garden, an honor system for borrowing tools and yard equipment, and free little libraries sprinkled throughout the neighborhood.
Coronado and the neighboring downtown area transform themselves from business districts to an entertainment mecca on Friday nights. You'll find everything from bars with live local music to a symphony and theater just a few steps away. On 7th Street there is a night club, while 16th Street has a spattering of dive bars. There is a local art space on 16th Street that encourages passersby to stop in and browse or attend one of their public events.
It's obvious from walking the streets that residents devote their time to maintaining their yards. Some visit the community garden for their week's worth of homegrown produce. The acclaimed Arizona Science Center and Heard Museum are just down the road, as is the Phoenix Art Museum. Nearby Coronado Park has a public swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, a baseball diamond, shaded picnic areas, and children's playgrounds.
