Around Country Club
Houses along the water are always prized in this neighborhood. It’s important to take into consideration the difference between a waterfront property and a property with beach access. The housing market is a blend of unique, single-family homes and lots of duplexes. Some apartment complexes exist, but detached homes abound. Since many houses are passed down generationally, there’s certainly a variety of styles based on recent renovations and specific tastes.
There are a surprising number of places to go out to eat nearby. Naturally, seafood abounds thanks to the neighborhood’s proximity to water. You’ll find a variety of crab shacks and fish shops as well as lots of Cuban and Puerto Rican eateries on Crosby Avenue. Classic American spots exist too, and don’t forget the neighborhood’s institution-like Italian spots: Orricio’s and Da Frano & Tony’s.
The mixture of housing and character of the buildings keeps Country Club from feeling buttoned up. There’s an ease in the distance the neighborhood happily keeps from Manhattan. Most errands require a bus ride or drive out of the neighborhood, which can be tedious. There are a few shops and markets scattered throughout the community, like bodegas and corner stores.
As the sun sets in Country Club, commuters return home from work in other parts of the Bronx or Manhattan. The energy is palpable—friends running into each other on the street, people rushing to get in beach time before it gets too dark. Plan on an indulgent dinner at De Franco & Tony Ristorante. If you’re more interested in a lively night, stick to the areas of the Bronx located more centrally.
Dedicate today to exploring all that Pelham Bay Park has to offer. At 2,764 acres (three times the size of Central Park), there’s no way a single day could provide enough time to really immerse yourself, but start with the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion. Perhaps, try a horseback riding lesson or a game of tennis, which can be booked online in advance. If you’re up for it, make the drive to the New York Botanical Garden to cap off the day.
Owning a car in Country Club is necessary. There is a neighborhood-specific bus line called the Bx24 that makes turns through Country Club before ending at the 6 train. This line travels into Midtown and Lower Manhattan, but a faster option is one of the neighborhood’s express buses. The nearest route on Country Club’s western side equates to a 50-minute trip into Midtown Manhattan.
