Around Downtown Waukegan
Waukegan is largely known as a thriving industrial center hosting companies like National Gypsum and AL Hansen Manufacturing. The city’s efforts to revitalize the downtown have frequently made headlines, indicating that the area may become more residential in the near future. Downtown Waukegan is already well-loved with many restaurants, bars, and shops, and it’s considered the urban center of Lake County. Lakefront amenities like Waukegan Harbor and Waukegan Municipal Beach are popular in the warmer months.
For a suburb of nearby Chicago, the cost of living stands only slightly above national average, and it is one of the cheapest options when compared to northwest suburbs like Elgin and Naperville. Housing, services, and goods are all very affordable. The revitalization of the downtown and lakefront may increase average housing costs eventually, but costs are quite manageable for the time being.
Waukegan offers many different modes of transportation. The Metra line provides service to and from Chicago via the Union Pacific/North Line, while Pace provides public bus access throughout Waukegan and its surrounding areas. The Waukegan National Airport allows international flights, and the city also has three separate taxi companies: 303 Taxi, Metro Yellow & Checker Cabs, and Speedy Taxi. But most prominent is the city’s harbor, which offers services to recreational boaters and access to over 90+ large shipping vessels annually.
Waukegan Public School District 60 serves the city. There are approximately 17,000 students in preschool through grade 12. Waukegan has three schools for early childhood, fifteen elementary schools, five middle schools, and three high school campuses. The Washington Campus serves as the Ninth Grade Center, while Brookside Campus houses grades 10-12. There is one Catholic private high school, St. Martin de Porres High School. Waukegan has three colleges: College of Lake County, State Career College, and Robert Morris University.
Waukegan holds several events that tourists and residents alike can enjoy. Most notably is the ArtWauk, an event that takes place every third Saturday of the month downtown. This event has a vast array of attractive features like performance art, sculptures, paintings, theatre, comedy, dance, films, and food. Likewise, HolidayWAUK is Waukegan’s holiday festival. The Genesee Theatre is a popular highlight of Waukegan. This concert hall and movie palace seats 2,400 people and hosts a variety of musical artists and shows.
