Mount Prospect Avenue is the main business and residential street in Forest Hill and features some of the city's most prominent condo properties. Branch Brook Park, originally planned by Fredrick Law Olmstead in 1867, is one of the largest and most important in the region and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 360-acre park, which stretches from Route 280 near East Orange all the way north into the neighboring town of Belleville, is the home of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, an internationally renowned celebration. Hendricks Field Golf Course is located across the street from Branch Brook Park on Franklin Avenue in Belleville, just a five-minute drive from Forest Hill.

Housing in Forest Hill tends to be at the upper end of the Newark market. However, anyone familiar with New York and Gold Coast prices or comparative homes in the Montclair or Glen Ridge suburbs will consider Forest Hill very affordable. The area contains some of the best apartments in the city, again at the upper end for Newark, but very affordable for similar sized units compared to other nearby cities.

Mount Prospect Avenue offers a range of local Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican cuisine, while Italian restaurants and Portuguese BBQ are in abundance in Roseville, located on Bloomfield Avenue around the corner from Forest Hill.

The district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been a green oasis in this urban center. Some of the most prominent members of the business and civic community have homes in the neighborhood.

Local restaurants and bars in Roseville, further south in the Ironbound, or downtown provide numerous options bring a date, watch a game, or take the family. Branch Brook Park often shows popular movies on weekend nights in the summertime and hosts festivals and other family events. Local movie theaters are easily accessed by car, light rail, or bus in Newark. Bloomfield and Montclair restaurants and independent movie houses are 10-15 minutes away by car or bus. Forest Hill is minutes from major highways, including McCarter Highway or I-280, which offer easy access to movie theaters in Clifton or other area locations.

Take a jog, run, play tennis or golf, or take the family on a picnic in Branch Brook Park. Visit local art exhibits in Newark or shop local stores in Newark, Bloomfield, or Montclair. Abundant shopping mall options are available in Clifton or along Route 3, which is 15-20 minutes away by car or bus. Play a round of golf up at Hendricks Field.

Frequent bus service stops along Mount Prospect Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue, connecting to commuter rail stops at Newark Broad Street station and Newark Penn Station. Several stops of the Newark Light Rail link Branch Brook Park to Newark Penn Station and connect to local bus transportation.
