There are many great family neighborhoods in Fort Sam Houston that are composed of all different sizes and types. One- and two-story residences abound and many are historical. The homes around Mahncke Park and the Botanical gardens are upper-end with big back yards and old oak trees. These homes are close to some of the best scenery in the whole area and are great for families. Government Hill has easy access to I-35 and a dramatic price drop compared to other neighborhoods in Fort Sam. This is by far the most affordable area in Fort Sam, while not suffering much in quality.
Authenticity abounds in the Fort Sam area. From authentic Creole to Mexican food to excellent Chinese fare. One need not venture to the heart of San Antonio for an excellent 5 star meal. MA Harper's Creole Kitchen is raved about by true Creole connoisseurs. The Po Boys and gumbo are at the top of the list of things to try.
Fort Sam is home to some gorgeous parks and other natural scenery. There is also plenty of water around, as the San Antonio River is on the west end of the neighborhood and Salado Creek runs throughout the area. You will also notice a lot of military personnel around, as this neighborhood is home to Fort Sam Houston.
Just minutes from downtown San Antonio, Fort Sam provides its residents access to some of the most famous night life in all North America. San Antonio's River Walk is great for the whole family during the day and turns into a classy party area at night.
Spend the perfect Sunday at the Quadrangle with the whole family or head there solo to get some quality time with nature. Be prepared to show ID whether military or not, as this portion of town is secured. This is a great place for kids and adults alike. The area is an awesome piece of American history with tons of animals roaming around that are completely tamed to human contact. They are affectionate and love to be hand-fed.
