Around Garfield Ridge
Since Garfield Ridge is largely residential there is really only one spot of the neighborhood that does not contain homes or apartments, which is the section of Midway Airport that lies in Garfield Ridge. Most residences in the area are single-family houses in the form of tudor, ranch or bungalow, all of which are popular around Chicago.
Due to the proximity of Midway, there's a good selection and quantity of restaurants compared to other neighborhoods of similar size. Almost all of these are located on Archer Avenue, what is essentially the neighborhood's main street. Much like other areas of Chicago, Garfield Ridge offers many cuisines from Italy, Poland, Mexico and east Asian fare.
Garfield Ridge has gone through major changes over the decades, yet still remains one of the more diverse neighborhoods of the city. Since it does border suburbs you'll find many families and long time residents, some even descendants of the original European settlers of the area. The construction of Midway brought many different people to the neighborhood for jobs and several remain today.
While the neighborhood is not known for its Friday night scene, there is a good selection of neighborhood bars, mostly located on Archer Ave. These are generally populated by short-term visitors staying in the area to remain close to Midway. For a quieter night, check out the popular local movie theater.
Garfield Ridge has distinction because of its unique geography compared to many other Chicago communities. The area was first settled because of its location to the Des Plaines River and the Chicago canal. Those bodies of water as well as a small oak tree forest make the neighborhood great for outdoors lovers. There are also a number of parks in Garfield Ridge for a great, relaxing family Sunday.
