Chicago, Illinois Homes for Sale

About Homan Square

Homan Square is a residential neighborhood built after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This small neighborhood differs from most, because the streets are not part of the traditional Chicago grid system. Instead, you will find houses built around curving drives that surround the main Homan Square Campus. Homan Square was once home to the original Sears, Roebuck and Co.--and is now home to the expansive Lawndale Plaza Shopping Center.

Roosevelt Road and Kedzie Avenue are the two main streets in Homan Square. Regardless of where you live, you are within walking distance of either the Green Line or several major bus routes. The real estate in the area offers everything from contemporary condominiums and townhouses, 2 and 3 flats, and traditional brick single family homes. Most homes have yards, but even if they don't, there are plenty of open lawns on the shared campus areas.

The culinary scene in Homan Square has improved significantly over the past decade. You will find many places that serve Chicago classics and your favorite fried foods; however, with the addition of the Lawndale Plaza and other nearby strip malls, you will also find a variety of chain restaurants and healthy food options.

Since the real estate in the neighborhood comes in many sizes and price points, you will find a great mix of residents. With the close proximity to downtown, Homan Square is ideal for professionals who work downtown, and college students who want to live near their downtown campus. Lawndale Plaza features one of the largest movie theaters in the city. It has assigned seating, traditional movie theater snacks, as well as bar and restaurant worthy foods. There are a few event spaces in the neighborhood, and many restaurants in the area are open late.

Sunday is a great day to get some shopping done, and almost everything you need is located within walking distance--grocery stores, Target, and clothing at all price points--including luxury and every day. It is only a short bust or car ride to the lakefront. You can also head over to the main neighborhood campus to see if there is anything going on. While the indoor areas of the campus are not available on Sunday, residents have access to a multitude of offerings including family, health, recreation and education services in a beautiful indoor facility that even boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool and state-of-the-art exercise equipment to choose from.
