Downers Grove is probably most often noted as a great place to live, as it frequently makes national rankings. It's also noted for the odd spelling of its name. It was founded by Pierce Downer and one would think there would be some punctuation in the name but, as is often said of the town, “Apostrophe-free since 1873.” There are some mid-nineteenth century homes still located in Downers Grove but this is one of the suburbs that has a fair number of different styles that represent the different time periods since the village's birth. It's also an area that's adding far more expensive new homes and has seen a fair number of older homes torn down with larger, more luxurious homes replacing them. Downers Grove is notable for its excellent school system, fun, family-friendly environment, and blossoming businesses. When looking to move outside of the city, this is one of the suburbs that offers great comfort with easy access to culture.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Downers Grove is significantly more than the average for the state, though not as high as other comparable suburbs, such as Hinsdale and Naperville. Median home prices are higher and the median income is slightly higher than average. However, there are affordable homes of every size in this community. The unemployment rate is low and there is access to many large employers in the area.
Transportation
Downers Grove offers a wealth of options in transportation. The village is served by PACE buses, for commuters who don't wish to drive. Those who work or go to school locally often commute via car and there is easy access to the Interstate, as well as Ogden Avenue which runs straight through to downtown Chicago. Other options include the Metra and BNSF Railway line. There's also a commuter shuttle to help residents get to the different railway stations for their commute.
Schools
Downers Grove is served by school districts 58 and 66, depending which area of the village students reside within. There are several primary schools and two middle schools within the public school districts. There are also two high schools: Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School. Midwestern University is also located in Downers Grove - this is a school that trains medical professionals ranging from osteopathic surgeons to pharmacists and dentists. The quality of education in Downers Grove is exceptionally high with an above average rate of the student body completing high school and moving on to college successfully.
Attractions
Downers Grove hosts numerous celebrations throughout the year, including the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Independence Day Celebration. They have a thriving park district which offers classes and activities for residents. There are excellent dining options in Downers Grove and nearby, as well as shopping and other activities to enjoy.
