Schaumburg's location and access to transit makes it desirable for people who want an easy commute to work and play. The community has been in existence since the 1850s, but it was primarily farmland up until the years following World War II. Its transition from farming community to suburb began in 1959 when the first planned community was built. Over time, large office buildings went up and major corporations located their headquarters within. Manufacturers also built their complexes in Schaumburg, lured by the easy access to O'Hare airport, the city of Chicago, and the booming northwest suburbs. While Woodfield Mall is arguably the most famous landmark in Schaumburg, it's also home to one of only two IKEA stores in Illinois.
Cost of Living
Life in Schaumburg costs more than than the US average, but it's not out of reach, either. The cost of housing is the primary driver while property taxes are reasonable. Schaumburg has a large mix of property types that include apartments, condominiums, townhomes, and single-family homes to choose from. This mix of dwellings creates a large pool of housing types to choose from and makes it easy for someone to find a residence that fits their need and price points.
Transportation
The town is serviced by all forms of transportation which makes it an excellent place for commuters to live. Highway 53 takes drivers north and south while Interstate 90 travels east and west. Both routes are easily accessed from major roadways that run through Schaumburg. There's also a Metra rail station on the Milwaukee West line at Springinsguth Road that takes commuters to Downtown Chicago. And there's an express bus service, run by Pace, that connects commuters with O'Hare airport and the Rosemont "El" station of the CTA.
Schools
Schaumburg has only one school district known as Schaumburg Central Consolidated School District 54. There are a total of 28 schools throughout the district and children can attend the school of their choice within the district. Four schools in the district received a rating of 10 from GreatSchools and parents can opt to send their children to those schools. Many colleges and universities have satellite campuses located throughout Schaumburg and Harper Community College is a short drive away in neighboring Palatine. Children can get a solid educational foundation with these options.
Attractions
Enjoy the local culture at events like Septemberfest, Prairie Arts Festival, and the Spring Fling. Septemberfest is the biggest event and held on municipal grounds. It features carnival rides, food and drink, a live stage for bands, craft beer and wine tastings, and vendors selling their wares. For a slower pace of entertainment, there's the Prairie Center for the Arts is a live theater venue that stages productions of famous plays, hosts live music, and offers youth programs to get kids interested in the performing arts.
