Baltimore, Maryland Homes for Sale

About Jonestown

Jonestown is a Baltimore neighborhood with a rich history and plenty of city landmarks. Established in 1732, David Jones founded the neighborhood as a home for the wealthy near the site of his mill, Jones Falls. While the neighborhood has modernized, Jonestown’s past is alive in the Jewish Museum of Maryland, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, The Phoenix Shot Tower, and other points of interest.

Around Jonestown

A renter-dominated neighborhood, the housing stock in Jonestown mostly consists of condo buildings and townhomes that replaced the neighborhood's public housing projects in the early 2000s.

Jonestown's dining options are limited to some casual cafes and delis including "Corned Beef Row," a small stretch of Lombard Street with delis specializing in corned beef sandwiches. Little Italy and Harbor East, though, are short walks away, and those neighborhoods offer many more dining options.

While filled with history and landmarks, Jonestown is not as much of a destination of its neighbors. Efforts are underway to boost the neighborhood's visibility with beautification efforts, housing developments, public amenities, and new branding. Expect to see the neighborhood changing.

Venture out to Little Italy for a night of dining and strolling around the neighborhood, or head out to some of the delis, cafes, and taverns closer to home. Jonestown is very centrally located, providing plenty of options for a night out in Baltimore.

With so many historic landmarks in the neighborhood alone, a Sunday in Jonestown has a lot to offer for history buffs. The neighborhood is part of the self-guided Heritage Walk, a trail linking 20 museums and historic sites along a 3.2-mile loop that starts in Inner Harbor and winds through Little Italy, Jonestown, and downtown Baltimore. (Guided trail tours also are available.) Some of the historic landmarks are also parks, like Shot Tower Park, so you can stop at the deli and enjoy a picnic.
