Around Judge's Hill
Judges Hill is mostly made up of detached single-family homes, many of which were built over a hundred years ago. You'll also find stately mansions, condos, and low-rise buildings mixed together within a relatively small area. For those staying in Austin temporarily, a few of these historic buildings have been converted into boutique hotels.
Unlike most other neighborhoods in Austin, you won't find many places to dine in Judges Hill due to its focus as a residential area. Within Judges Hill itself, you may find some food trucks that have set-up shop in the parking lots of local office buildings. If you don't mind a quick walk however, you'll find some of the best food in the country in the rest of downtown.
The demographics in Judges Hill tend to skew a little older than those of the surrounding area. Partly because of the extremely high home prices, you won't see many UT students in this pocket. Instead, the neighborhood is mostly made up of families, retirees, and young professionals. You'll also see plenty of dogs -- Austinites love their canines and the housing styles and big yards in Judges Hill are especially well-suited for pooches.
The truth is Judges Hill isn't the place to spend the night on the town. There is a major dearth of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues within this neighborhood's boundaries. So unless you're going to a house party, your best bet is to walk away from the area for a few minutes in any direction. You'll find a wide range of places to grab a drink or see a show. There's an especially high concentration of bars a few blocks eat along Guadalupe, many of which regularly host live music on a nightly basis.
Judges Hill is an idyllic spot for a lazy Sunday afternoon. With the most open green spaces and largest concentration of trees you can find in the downtown area, strolling around the neighborhood is a great way to relax -- plus all that shade is especially welcome during the hot Austin summers. On your walk, you can also browse in Judges Hill's handful of boutique shops or take a look at its historic architecture.
