Around Northgate

Northgate is home to Northgate Mall, which takes up most of the area along NE Northgate Way, 1st Avenue NE, and 5th Avenue NE. The neighborhood also consists of condos, expansive apartment buildings, and modest single-family homes. Most residences are on the older side featuring well-lived brick exterior buildings and two-story mid-century family homes. The I-5 freeway also runs along the west side of the neighborhood, so residents living near this area will have to deal with the noise from traffic. The neighborhood has seen a lot of residential and commercial development over the last few years.

While many eateries are located within Northgate Mall, you can also find a variety of local and national chain restaurants and cafes along NE Northgate Way, which is the main thoroughfare in the neighborhood. You’ll find everything from breakfast diners, pizzerias, and burger joints to ramen bowls and tacos.

Northgate is a combination of retail and residential, so expect to see many shoppers from other parts of the city coming in and out of the neighborhood. Besides the busy mall traffic and local business district, Northgate retains a cozy, residential vibe thanks to local parks and greenspaces such as Northgate Park, Beaver Pond Natural Area, Hubbard Homestead, and Thornton Creek. With so many amenities available within the neighborhood, residents can easily walk to the grocery store, park, or restaurant.

Northgate isn’t really known for its Friday night scene and lacks in entertainment and nightlife options. The next best thing is catching the latest blockbuster films at the Regal movie theater with an IMAX screen or grab food and drinks at one of the many restaurants in and around the mall. For late-night outings, residents will need to travel outside of Northgate to find a few cocktail bars in nearby Maple Leaf.

With Northgate Mall as the main attraction in the neighborhood, you can easily spend your Sundays there. Unlike other shopping malls, you won’t spend the majority of your day fighting for a parking spot either thanks to the mall’s spacious parking lot. There are also several national stores and commercial centers nearby that offer additional retail options. Other than spending the day shopping, residents can spend time jogging, walking their dogs around the parks, or grabbing brunch at one of the many restaurants along NE Northgate Way.

Getting around Northgate is easy. If you have a car, you’ll have easy access to Highway 99 and Interstate 5 that runs north and south of the city. You can also expect some congestion along Northgate Way that borders the mall during afternoon rush-hour commutes and holidays. The Northgate Transit Center (NTC), which is one of the most active bus terminals in the city with plenty of parking, allows residents to get downtown quickly. The neighborhood is also expected to gain a new light rail station in 2021, Northgate Station, which will be located within walking distance from the mall. For long-distance travel, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a 30-minute drive from Northgate.
