Around Oxford Circle-Castor Gardens
Families with small children may want to live close to one of the two playgrounds. You’ve got one on St. Vincent and Pennway Streets and another on Summerdale Avenue and Levick Street. Quick bites, casual dining restaurants, salons, barbers, and retailers are mostly on Castor Avenue. You’ll find the 59 Bus running up and down all the side streets off Castor Avenue as well. Living on the east side of the neighborhood will put you close to the Lincoln Highway.
The cost of living here is great compared to other neighborhoods. You’ll get quite a bit of space for your dollar. Some spaces won’t have up-to-date interiors and may require renovation. Overall though, buying a home here is a steal.
Given the melting pot of diversity in Oxford Circle-Castor Gardens, culinary options aren’t limited. You’ve got Jamaican, Brazilian, Chinese, Italian, Middle Eastern, and Dominican fare. A popular casual haunt is the Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse. Locals rave about their well-seasoned steak selection and the laid-back atmosphere. You’ll find tons of options up and down Castor Avenue, including national chains.
Oxford Circle-Castor Gardens stays true to its origins. This being the case, many of the homes and buildings are traditional red brick and stone row houses. There aren’t as many green spaces as locals might like, but you’ll find tree-lined blocks. Shopping is so accessible, as Castor Ave is the shopping district which runs right through the neighborhood, and just across Cottman Avenue is the Roosevelt Mall.
Given Castor Avenue is known for its food and retailers, nightlife options fit right in. You might enjoy a few games of bowling at the local bowling alley, Thunderbird Lanes, to start your evening. Because it shares its borders with close neighboring areas, the bars, pubs, lounges, and music venues bleed into each other. You’ll likely find yourself outside of the city limits to enjoy some of these.
There are plenty of churches to choose from on a Sunday morning. Otherwise, what better way to spend your afternoon than skating? The popular rink, Rolling Thunder Skating Rink, is off Roosevelt Boulevard. They’ve got different skate nights for adults and kids as well as nights for specific music genres. Skip over to Mayfair Park in the same area for a picnic and let the kids enjoy the playground. There are also a few markets off Castor Avenue to tackle your upcoming weekday shopping. These include well-known chains like Save-A-Lot and Target.
The neighborhood is accessible as far as proximity to major highways and buses goes, but there aren’t any subway stations within the neighborhood. It’s also not the most walkable if you aren’t near Castor Avenue. You’re better off getting around by car, although parking could be a challenge at times.
