Around Palisades
Homes here include cute bungalows, colonials that look right out of a magazine, and some modern homes for budding families. Homes here are pricey; condos are few and far between, but provide more affordable options. The area is also known for its tree-lined streets, beautiful houses, and walkability. MacArthur Boulevard is the main commercial strip with shops and restaurants.
MacArthur Boulevard offers a wealth of great restaurants for locals. The intersection of Dana Place Northwest and MacArthur Boulevard has upscale French restaurants, Asian restaurants, higher-end American fare, and Belgian eateries. There aren't many chains or fast food spots here, save the occasional Starbucks. Farther down on MacArthur Boulevard where it meets V Street Northwest, there's authentic pizza, upscale Japanese, a popular Mediterrean café, and fresh seafood.
During the week, you can expect to see families dropping their kids off at school, as there are several prominent schools in this area. At night the neighborhood sort of shuts down; you won't find much activity or anyone walking around past 10 p.m. On weekends, you can find families taking a walk down to the water, hiking along the trail, or playing sports at one of the local playgrounds or fields.
Head to dinner at one of the well-known local establishments in this area. Grab a drink at a bar next door if you feel like a night cap, otherwise, take a stroll down MacArthur Boulevard to window shop. Or, head down to the waterfront for a romantic walk along the Capital Crescent Trail or Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) pathway. Palisades is quiet--if you are looking for a vibrant nightlife with lots of bars and dance clubs, you may want to go elsewhere.
For an area that doesn't get much attention, there's a lot of things to do in this neighborhood on a Sunday. Head to Fletcher's Cove to rent kayaks by the hour and enjoy the calm surroundings as you float on the Potomac River. You can even rent a bike to ride on the Capital Crescent Trail, or take a run on the water. Grab some coffee or lunch at a bakery or French bistro along MacArthur Boulevard. Stroll around one of the neighborhood's many lush green parks to wind down your weekend.
